POLARIS Project: containment/interception trials of plastic pellets (Nurdles) using bubble curtains
Published on 03.09.2026
As part of the POLARIS project, a new trial campaign took place at CEDRE's facilities from September 1st to 3rd. In the event of a spill of plastic pellets (nurdles) in an aquatic environment, containment and/or interception on the water surface is an operational response to limit dispersion, protect sensitive areas, and facilitate recovery. In this context, a bubble curtain provided by the company CanadianPond was tested to evaluate the effectiveness of this technology for plastic pellets. This work consolidates operational knowledge on booms that can be deployed for this type of pollution. The results will enrich the reflex sheets and practical guides developed under POLARIS for authorities and field operators.
