Study of the behavior of GTL (Gas to Liquid), a new alternative fuel
Published on 08.04.2026
As part of a project funded by the European Maritime Safety Agency and led by the World Maritime University, CEDRE studied the behavior and fate of GTL (Gas to Liquid). This product is a new biodiesel that is not yet widely used in France. The only known national uses involve ski slope groomers as well as watercraft on Lakes Annecy or Bourget. This fuel, which has a composition very close to standard diesel, is produced from natural gas using the "Fischer-Tropsch" process. As part of the project, we studied it in the laboratory and then in our Polludrome® to better understand its behavior and to evaluate the effectiveness of conventional oil spill response techniques in the event of a discharge.
