Spain

On 6 December 1973, the tanker Splendid Breeze was travelling from Liverpool to Mena Al Ahmadi (Kuwait) when it grounded off the Salvage Islands, 85 miles north of the Canaries.

Four days later, the vessel broke in two and sank. 2,000 tonnes of bunker fuel were spilt at sea.
The 36 crew members were rescued and taken to Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain).
