MARPOCS
Development of a common operational framework for preparedness and response to oil and HNS spills
The MARPOCS project (Multinational Response and Preparedness to Oil and Chemical Spills) aims to develop and implement an integrated operational framework for preparedness and response to oil and HNS spills in marine waters. This project concerns the Atlantic sub-region of Morocco, Madeira and the Canary Islands.
It has 4 expected outcomes:
- Operational and tactical model-based decision-support systems supported by the existing 3D oil & HNS spill modelling system MOHID (3D water modelling system).
- Automatic early warning spill forecasting connected to existing maritime surveillance automatic services: EMSA's CleanSeaNet service and AIS Marine Traffic.
- Training sessions, courses, exercises and hands-on demonstrations, with special focus on emergency preparedness or response scenarios involving multiple nations.
- Characterization of shoreline holistic risk from spills in the area of interest in order to identify "hot spots", to improve management of the distribution of response resources.
CEDRE is involved in the whole of the project and more specifically is tasked with helping to improve the MOHID software through experimental trials and training courses and exercises.
