GALERNE
Evaporating gases and liquids and risks of environmental and human impacts
The GALERNE project focuses on shipping incidents involving chemical tankers transporting evaporating hazardous substances or gas carriers transporting gases in liquid state: LNG (methane), LPG (butane, propane), vinyl chloride monomer, ammonia, etc., transported in liquid state (at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature), pressurised or refrigerated.
In the event of a shipping incident, the gases emitted from the ship or from floating/evaporating slicks generate major risks for responders and local inhabitants: fire, explosion of the gas cloud itself or of the liquid gas still contained within the vessel (BLEVE) and toxicity of the gas cloud. The ever-increasing capacity and number of vessels makes this threat more acute.
The aim of the GALERNE project is to better understand the risk generated by such cargoes in the event of a shipping incident.
