Investigating the impact of oil contamination in hypoxic areas and the use of dispersant as a response technique

Among anthropogenic pressures, hypoxia and oil pollution are both threats present in coastal marine ecosystems. However, few studies have yet investigated the biological impacts of their interaction. At the frontier of current knowledge in marine ecotoxiocology, the DISHY project (synergistic effects of DISpersant, oil and HYpoxia in a teleost fish) investigates the effects of an oil spill on European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) dwelling in hypoxic areas and also addresses the impact of dispersant application to surface slicks. The biological effects will be measured by assessing physiological decontamination processes, oxidative stress and metabolism-related parameters as well as, at a higher level, by evaluating the fish's escape response when faced with a predator.
