Enalios Thetis

On 6 May 1999, during a loading operation onto the Maltese oil tanker Enalios Thetis, 55,650 litres of crude oil were spilt into the sea at Sarroch oil terminal (south of Sardinia).

Thirteen kilometres of shoreline were polluted due to the oil spill. Clean-up operations were carried out by teams from the Sarroch refinery, as well as by pollution response companies recruited by the shipowner. The use of dispersants and sorbents at sea remained limited. On the coast, pressure washing was the main technique used.
